What Is a Vignette?
A vignette is a road permit that lets you drive on motorways, expressways, and certain tolled roads in many European countries. It is essentially a prepaid road tax for a fixed period rather than a per-trip toll.
Most countries have replaced the old windscreen sticker with a digital vignette (also called e-vignette) that is linked to your vehicle license plate. There is nothing physical to display. Cameras at the roadside check your plate against the database, so the vignette must be active before you reach the first toll road.
