In Hungary, the digital vignette is required for motorcycles, passenger cars, vans, campers, buses (with a maximum mass up to 3,500 kg), and trailers. If you are driving with a caravan or trailer, a separate vignette is also necessary for the trailer, except for trailers/caravans used with motorcycles and passenger cars with a maximum of 7 seats and a weight limit of 3,500 kg.
Trucks with a maximum permitted mass exceeding 3,500 kg are exempt from the digital vignette. Instead, Hungary utilizes an obligatory electronic toll system for these vehicles, known as HU-GO.
Vehicle Category D1: This includes motorcycles and passenger cars designed for up to 7 persons, with a maximum authorized mass of 3.5 tons, and their trailers. This category is designated if field “J” (vehicle category) of the vehicle registration certificate contains the code M1 or M1G.
Vehicle Category D2: This category encompasses all motor vehicles that do not fall under any other specific vehicle category and are not subject to toll payment under a separate law. Vehicles classified under N1 or N1G in the vehicle category field of the official certificate (e.g., vehicle registration certificate), regardless of seating capacity, are included here. This also applies to vehicles with a seating capacity of 8 or more.
Vehicle Category B2: This category is for buses, defined as motor vehicles intended for passenger transport, equipped with more than 9 permanent seats, including the driver’s seat.
Vehicle Category U: This includes any trailers for vehicles in categories D2 and B2.
Starting from the beginning of 2019, trailer authorizations (vehicle category U) are also available for vehicles in category D2 or B2, in addition to the D2 or B2 authorization. This is advantageous for motorists, as it allows the use of a category U digital vignette purchased for the towing vehicle to tow any trailer.

When driving in Hungary, besides possessing a valid vignette, there are several mandatory items you must have in your vehicle:
Warning Triangle: Crucial for signaling other drivers in situations like breakdowns or roadside emergencies.
Safety Vest: Essential for ensuring your visibility, particularly important in low-light conditions or during stops on the roadside.
Car First Aid Kit/Bag: A necessary item for providing immediate medical assistance in case of minor injuries or emergencies.
It is imperative to note that the possession of certain items in your vehicle while driving in Hungary is not only a legal mandate but also significantly contributes to the overall safety of your travels. Compliance with these regulations is essential for ensuring both adherence to the law and the well-being of all road users.
Please note that once your order for a Hungary digital vignette has been processed, it cannot be refunded. This policy underscores the importance of ensuring all details are correct before finalizing your digital vignette purchase.
